Crabbing and Sightseeing on LBI

 Jimmy has lived on this island for most of his life, so of course, he has a boat! He's a great one for taking advantage of where he lives and one of the things to do here is .. crabbing! It was a beautiful day for a boat ride so we jumped at the offer to go out on the bay and see if we could catch some crabs.

Well, it was a beautiful day out in the bay anyway! We did catch a few, but they were all small and we put them back. The catching process is interesting; you just put a piece of fish on a hook at the end of a line, lower the line to the bottom (we were in 3-6 feet of water) and wait. Every once in a while you slowly raise the line and there may be a crab hanging on and munching on the fish. Then you need help with a net to scoop up the crab. 

We went out a second day and had more luck.

We still had a few days before leaving for London, so we decided to do some shopping, and some sightseeing. For shopping, we always check in at the Surf City 5&10. This time of year they're having their end of season closeout sale. It's always good for a tshirt or two and we love items with LBI logos. The real find though was a warm jacket - something we need for London and don't have! I was happy enough to find a warm, light, compact coat, but then I noticed the tag that showed how it stuffs into an attached collar pocket that turns it into a neck pillow for the airplane. You know the Surf City 5&10 by the lighthouse out front. A replica of the Barnegat Lighthouse at the north end of the island. Speaking of the Barnegat Lighthouse, it was being renovated last time we were here and you couldn't see if for all the scaffolding. So, it behooves us to visit this time. It was a gorgeous day so we took the opportunity to walk all the way around and thru the bit of woods nearby as well.

We also climbed the 217 steps to get the view from the top!

"Old Barney" is at the northernmost end of the island. 18 miles to the south is the southernmost point. Jim decided we needed to see that today as well.

Of course, the most beautiful sights are right from our back yard - well, Jimmy's back yard that is.

LBI Family

 Jim lived on Long Beach Island, New Jersey, from the mid 60s to the mid 70s, and he's taken me there nearly every year since we've been RVers. We love it, and we always stay at his old friend, Jimmy Lyon's, house. He has a big driveway that ends right at the bay, and it is our second home.

If I have one gorgeous sunset photo from this spot, I have 250! I can never resist.

We love that we can stay here, without intruding on the rest of the house, because he has plenty of family that comes to visit as well. We like to think of them as our extended family! This year we got to meet the latest addition - Logan. What a cutie-pie!

Bye Bye LBI

LBI - Long Beach Island, New Jersey was our first destination when we started RVing in 2004, and we try to get back here most every year.  Our friend, Jimmy, has such a great place - right on the bay and just across the street from the ocean.  And, Jim has lots of friends and family here.  We usually try to come in spring or fall because that's the best weather.  This year it just worked out to be July.

It was Hot.

A few nights it cooled off a little.  That was mostly because storms came thru.  And, oh boy! do those storms come up fast!

If you're not using the table or chair, they better be stowed because it only takes minutes for serious storms to hit.

A couple of days we beat the heat the old fashioned way - by jumping into the ocean.  Although still chilly at 76 degrees - that's a lot warmer than the ocean normally is here and even I was able to get wet and play in the surf.  I didn't take my camera on those days, but did snap a couple photos on another day.

I got a real kick out of this seagull carrying a bagel.  Is he the beach delivery service?

There are several friends we try to get together with whenever we're "on the island" and Jimmy is generous to let us have a party at his place.  Thankfully he has umbrellas to give a little respite from the heat.

This is the reason we call it a "Corned Ham" party!

At the Shore

One of our favorite parking places in the country is at our friend, Jimmy Lyon's driveway on Long Beach Island - New Jersey Shore.

We're here for about a week.  It's Hot. We're right across the road from the beach where the chilly Atlantic Ocean is waiting to cool you off.  Jimmy has lived here for a looooong time, and he has lots of friends who come to visit.  Parties are a way of life. Old friends and new friends.  We have a good time.
